What is Remedial Massage?

I'm sure you heard about "Remedial Massage", but what is it really and who is it for?

Remedial massage is a deep tissue massage that manipulates the soft tissues of the body for a specific therapeutic effect.

Remedial Massage is performed by a qualified person with a Certified Diploma. Therapists have studied human anatomy and physiology and understand how the body works and needs to move correctly. Therefore, they can determine where to treat each patient depending on their presenting complaint.

The aim is to return the human body back to normal health after injury or a muscular-skeletal disorder. Remedial Massage is used to treat muscular-skeletal imbalances, strains, sprains, broken bones, bruising or any injury where the skin is intact. It removes knots, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions.

Remedial Massage can be used as preventative to speed up recovery and to encourage more complete healing. It is also used for conditions created by lifestyle, for example: repetitive strain injury, back pain, neck and shoulder tightness. It works very effectively on office-desk related postural issues. Remedial Massage is designed to increase the flow of blood and lymph fluid, lengthen out and relax the muscles, causing more flexibility and movement.

During the treatment, there is often tenderness in areas that are being treated. The therapist uses the patient’s feedback to pinpoint the damaged tissue and to regulate pressure and techniques. It is sometimes an uncomfortable treatment, but the benefits can be felt for days/weeks afterwards.

There are many conditions that Remedial Massage can treat. Below are some common conditions:

  • Tendonitis
  • Poor posture
  • Sciatica
  • General muscular tension
  • Hamstring Injuries
  • Restricted range of movement
  • Repetitive Strain Injury
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Shin Splints
  • Groin Strain
  • Cartilage damage
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Scar tissue
  • Adhesions
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
